About you

Soy…

PLjestemENI am

„Ser” describes what's lasting — who you are, where you're from, what you're like.

Literally „I call myself”. The simplest way to introduce yourself.

  • Me llamo Ana.
    /me ˈʝa.mo ˈa.na/
PLMam na imię Ana.ENMy name is Ana.
  • ¿Cómo te llamas?
    /ˈko.mo te ˈʝa.mas/

PLMiło mi, nazywam się Luis.ENNice to meet you, I'm Luis.

Vivo en…

PLmieszkam wENI live in

„Vivir” means both „to live somewhere” and „to be alive”. „Vivo” alone already means „I live”.

  • Vivo en Madrid.
    /ˈbi.βo en maˈðɾið/
PLMieszkam w Madrycie.ENI live in Madrid.
  • Vivo en el centro.
    /ˈbi.βo en el ˈθen.tɾo/
PLMieszkam w centrum.ENI live in the centre.

    PLMieszkam tu niedaleko.ENI live nearby.

Trabajo en…

PLpracuję wENI work in

„Trabajo” is also the noun „job/work”. With „en” you say where you work.

  • Trabajo en tecnología.
    /tɾaˈβa.xo en tek.no.loˈxi.a/
PLPracuję w technologii.ENI work in tech.
  • Trabajo desde casa.
    /tɾaˈβa.xo ˈdes.de ˈka.sa/
PLPracuję z domu.ENI work from home.

  • Trabajo en un bar.
    /tɾaˈβa.xo en um ˈbaɾ/
    PLPracuję w barze.ENI work at a bar.

Tengo

PLmamENI have

In Spanish you „have” 30 years, not „are” 30. „Tengo” stretches to hunger and sleepiness too.

Common mistake

Soy treinta años.Tengo treinta años.

Age is expressed with „tener” — in Spanish you „have” 30 years, not „are” 30.

  • Tengo treinta años.
    /ˈteŋ.go ˈtɾejn.ta ˈa.ɲos/
    PLMam 30 lat.ENI'm thirty.
  • Tengo hambre.
    /ˈteŋ.go ˈam.bɾe/

  • Tengo dudas.
    /ˈteŋ.go ˈðu.ðas/
    PLMam wątpliwości.ENI have doubts.

Mi cumpleaños es…

PLmoje urodziny sąENmy birthday is

You say your birthday date with „ser”, not „tener”: „el” + day + „de” + month.

  • ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?
    /ˈkwan.do es tu kum.pleˈa.ɲos/
PLKiedy masz urodziny?ENWhen is your birthday?
  • Mi cumpleaños es el quince de abril.
    /mi kum.pleˈa.ɲos es el ˈkin.θe ðe aˈβɾil/
PLMoje urodziny są piętnastego kwietnia.ENMy birthday is on the fifteenth of April.
  • Es el quince de abril.
    /es el ˈkin.θe ðe aˈβɾil/
PLPiętnastego kwietnia.ENIt's the fifteenth of April.

Me gusta

PLlubięENI like

Literally „it pleases me” — the grammar is reversed, but you use it every day.

Common mistake

Yo gusto el café.Me gusta el café.

„Gustar” works backwards: the thing „pleases” you. The subject is the coffee, not you — hence „me gusta el café”, literally „the coffee pleases me”.

  • Me gusta el café.
    /me ˈɣus.ta el kaˈfe/
    PLLubię kawę.ENI like coffee.
  • Me gusta caminar.
    /me ˈɣus.ta ka.miˈnaɾ/

PLBardzo mi się podoba.ENI really like it.

Se me olvidó.

PLzapomniałam/emENI forgot

In Spanish the thing „forgets itself” — „se me olvidó” sounds more natural than „olvidé”.

  • Se me olvidó.
    /se me ol.βiˈðo/
    PLZapomniałam.ENI forgot.
  • Se me olvidó el nombre.
    /se me ol.βiˈðo el ˈnom.bɾe/

  • Olvidé decírtelo.
    /ol.βiˈðe deˈθiɾ.te.lo/
PLZapomniałam ci powiedzieć.ENI forgot to tell you.
Put it together · about you

Preséntate

The same constructions joined into one short self-introduction — how they sound together.

    /ˈo.la | me ˈʝa.mo ˈa.na/
PLCześć, mam na imię Ana.ENHi, my name is Ana.
