Simple past

Simple past · pretérito indefinido

The pretérito tells you about one completed event in the past — something that started and finished. Not “what I was doing” (that’s imperfecto), but what happened: habl·é con ella ayer.

In the present tense -er and -ir have different endings. In the pretérito they’re identical — learn one pattern, get both. Click any verb in the list above to see its conjugation.

Need the full conjugation of one specific verb — across every tense? Every verb's tables are in the dictionary →

Unlike the “yo irregular” verbs from the present tense, here none of the six persons is regular — the whole verb conjugates through a new, irregular stem. The good news: the endings (-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron) are the same across every verb in this group.

Don’t learn 11 separate tables — learn the stems. Once you know the endings (-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron), you just need one irregular stem per verb: tuv-, estuv-, anduv-, pud-, pus-, quis-, vin-, dij-, traj-, hic-, hub-.

This is a separate thing from present-tense stem-changing — it only affects -ir verbs and only two persons. -ar and -er verbs (even ones with a present-tense stem change, like pensar, volver) are fully regular in the pretérito.
