I was, I used to: indefinido and imperfecto

Two past tenses — the choice isn't about „when” but „how” you frame it: a closed event (indefinido) or background/state (imperfecto).

I did something once (regular forms)

A2-ar: hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablasteis, hablaron / -er,-ir: comí, comiste, comió, comimos, comisteis, comieron

Regular indefinido has two endings sets: one for -ar verbs, a shared one for -er and -ir. You use it for an event finished at a specific point in the past — even if it lasted a while, what matters is that it's over.

Examples
  • Ayer hablé con mi jefe.
    /aˈʝeɾ aˈβle kon mi ˈxe.fe/
PLWczoraj rozmawiałem z moim szefem.ENI talked to my boss yesterday.
  • Comimos en un restaurante nuevo.
    /koˈmi.mos en un res.tawˈɾan.te ˈnwe.βo/
PLZjedliśmy w nowej restauracji.ENWe ate at a new restaurant.
  • Viví en Madrid dos años.
    /biˈβi en maˈðɾið dos ˈa.ɲos/
PLMieszkałem w Madrycie dwa lata.ENI lived in Madrid for two years.
Common mistake

Ayer hablaba con mi jefe.Ayer hablé con mi jefe.

„Ayer” points at one specific, closed day — that kind of event takes indefinido, not imperfecto.

Irregular verbs in indefinido

A2ser/ir → fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron; hacer → hice, hiciste, hizo…; tener → tuve, tuviste, tuvo…

Indefinido has quite a few irregular verbs with their own stem. „Ser” and „ir” share identical forms — context tells them apart. These conjugations have to be memorized separately; you can't derive them from the infinitive.

Examples
  • Fui al cine el sábado.
    /fwi al ˈθi.ne el ˈsa.βa.ðo/
PLPoszedłem do kina w sobotę.ENI went to the cinema on Saturday.
  • Fue una noche increíble.
    /fwe ˈu.na ˈno.tʃe in.kɾeˈi.βle/
PLTo była niesamowita noc.ENIt was an incredible night.
  • Tuve que trabajar hasta tarde.
    /ˈtu.βe ke tɾa.βaˈxaɾ ˈas.ta ˈtaɾ.ðe/
PLMusiałem pracować do późna.ENI had to work late.
Common mistake

Yo fue al cine.Yo fui al cine.

„Fue” is the „él/ella” (he/she) form, „fui” is „yo” (I) — easy to mix up since both come from the same irregular stem.

I used to do something (regular forms)

A2-ar: hablaba, hablabas, hablaba, hablábamos, hablabais, hablaban / -er,-ir: comía, comías, comía, comíamos, comíais, comían

Regular imperfecto also has two ending sets (-ar separate, -er/-ir shared), but with no exceptions in how it's formed. It describes a habitual, repeated action — English „used to do” / „would do”.

Examples
  • De niño, jugaba en la calle.
    /de ˈni.ɲo xuˈɣa.βa en la ˈka.ʝe/
PLJako dziecko bawiłem się na ulicy.ENAs a kid, I used to play in the street.
  • Todos los domingos comíamos juntos.
    /ˈto.ðos los doˈmiŋ.ɡos koˈmi.a.mos ˈxun.tos/
PLW każdą niedzielę jedliśmy razem.ENEvery Sunday we used to eat together.
  • Vivíamos cerca del mar.
    /biˈβi.a.mos ˈθeɾ.ka del maɾ/
PLMieszkaliśmy blisko morza.ENWe used to live near the sea.
Common mistake

Ayer jugaba en la calle.Ayer jugué en la calle.

„Ayer” is again one specific day — even for something like playing, a one-off event wants indefinido, not imperfecto.

Three irregular verbs in imperfecto

A2ser → era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran; ir → iba, ibas, iba…; ver → veía, veías, veía…

Unlike indefinido, imperfecto has only three irregular verbs: „ser”, „ir” and „ver”. Every other verb — even ones wildly irregular in other tenses — conjugates completely regularly in imperfecto.

Examples
  • Cuando era pequeño, quería ser piloto.
    /ˈkwan.do ˈe.ɾa peˈke.ɲo keˈɾi.a seɾ piˈlo.to/
PLKiedy byłem mały, chciałem być pilotem.ENWhen I was little, I wanted to be a pilot.
  • Íbamos a la playa cada verano.
    /ˈi.βa.mos a la ˈpla.ʝa ˈka.ða beˈɾa.no/
PLJeździliśmy na plażę co lato.ENWe used to go to the beach every summer.
  • Veíamos la tele después de cenar.
    /beˈi.a.mos la ˈte.le desˈpwes de θeˈnaɾ/
PLOglądaliśmy telewizję po kolacji.ENWe used to watch TV after dinner.
Common mistake

Cuando yo siendo pequeño…Cuando yo era pequeño…

„Ser” in imperfecto is „era”, not the gerund form „siendo” — that's a completely different construction.

Backdrop vs. event: imperfecto + indefinido

B1verbo en imperfecto + cuando + verbo en indefinido

The classic narrative pattern: imperfecto paints the ongoing background, indefinido is the event that interrupts it. „Cuando” often marks that turning point.

Examples
  • Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono.
    /doɾˈmi.a ˈkwan.do soˈno el teˈle.fo.no/
PLSpałem, kiedy zadzwonił telefon.ENI was sleeping when the phone rang.
  • Llovía cuando salimos de casa.
    /ʝoˈβi.a ˈkwan.do saˈli.mos de ˈka.sa/
PLPadało, kiedy wyszliśmy z domu.ENIt was raining when we left home.
  • Estábamos cenando cuando llegaron.
    /esˈta.βa.mos θeˈnan.do ˈkwan.do ʝeˈɣa.ɾon/
PLJedliśmy kolację, kiedy przyjechali.ENWe were having dinner when they arrived.
Common mistake

Dormí cuando sonó el teléfono.Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono.

The background (sleeping while something happened) is imperfecto. Indefinido for both verbs would sound like the sleeping finished, and only then did the phone ring.

Two actions at once: mientras

B1mientras + verbo en imperfecto, verbo en imperfecto

„Mientras” (while) links two actions happening in parallel — both in imperfecto. That's different from the „cuando” interruption pattern: here neither action cuts the other short, they just happen together.

Examples
  • Mientras yo cocinaba, él ponía la mesa.
    /ˈmjen.tɾas ʝo ko.θiˈna.βa el poˈni.a la ˈme.sa/
PLPodczas gdy ja gotowałem, on nakrywał do stołu.ENWhile I was cooking, he was setting the table.
  • Mientras estudiaba, escuchaba música.
    /ˈmjen.tɾas es.tuˈðja.βa es.kuˈtʃa.βa ˈmu.si.ka/
PLPodczas nauki słuchałem muzyki.ENWhile studying, I listened to music.
  • Mientras ella hablaba, yo tomaba notas.
    /ˈmjen.tɾas ˈe.ʝa aˈβla.βa ʝo toˈma.βa ˈno.tas/
PLPodczas gdy ona mówiła, ja robiłem notatki.ENWhile she was talking, I was taking notes.
Common mistake

Mientras cociné, él puso la mesa.Mientras cocinaba, él ponía la mesa.

Two actions stretched over time and happening in parallel both take imperfecto — indefinido would frame them as separate, finished events, not overlapping ones.

One after another: sequence of events

B1verbo (indefinido), verbo (indefinido) y verbo (indefinido)

A chain of one-off, completed actions in narrative order — the whole chain takes indefinido. This is the backbone of storytelling: „I woke up, ate, left”.

Examples
  • Me desperté, desayuné y salí de casa.
    /me des.peɾˈte de.sa.ʝuˈne i saˈli de ˈka.sa/
PLObudziłem się, zjadłem śniadanie i wyszedłem z domu.ENI woke up, had breakfast, and left the house.
  • Llegó, saludó y se sentó.
    /ʝeˈɣo sa.luˈðo i se senˈto/
PLPrzyszedł, przywitał się i usiadł.ENHe arrived, greeted us, and sat down.
  • Compré el billete, hice la maleta y cogí el avión.
    /komˈpɾe el biˈʝe.te ˈi.θe la maˈle.ta i koˈxi el aˈβjon/
PLKupiłem bilet, spakowałem walizkę i wsiadłem do samolotu.ENI bought the ticket, packed my bag, and caught the plane.
Common mistake

Me despertaba, desayunaba y salía de casa.Me desperté, desayuné y salí de casa.

Since this is a one-off chain of events on a specific day, not a daily routine, every verb in the chain takes indefinido, not imperfecto.

Age, time, and description in the past

B1tener + [wiek] años / ser + la(s) + [godzina] — w imperfecto

Age, time of day, and physical/emotional description in the past default to imperfecto, because they describe a state, not a bounded event — even inside a sentence where everything else is indefinido.

Examples
  • Tenía quince años cuando empecé a trabajar.
    /teˈni.a ˈkin.θe ˈa.ɲos ˈkwan.do em.peˈθe a tɾa.βaˈxaɾ/
PLMiałem piętnaście lat, kiedy zacząłem pracować.ENI was fifteen when I started working.
  • Eran las tres de la tarde.
/ˈe.ɾan las tɾes de la ˈtaɾ.ðe/
PLByła trzecia po południu.ENIt was three in the afternoon.
  • Mi abuela era alta y tenía el pelo negro.
    /mi aˈβwe.la ˈe.ɾa ˈal.ta i teˈni.a el ˈpe.lo ˈne.ɣɾo/
PLMoja babcia była wysoka i miała czarne włosy.ENMy grandmother was tall and had black hair.
Common mistake

Tuve quince años cuando empecé a trabajar.Tenía quince años cuando empecé a trabajar.

Age is a state, not a time-bounded event — always imperfecto, even when the rest of the sentence is indefinido.

How long ago: hace + indefinido

B1verbo (indefinido) + hace + [czas] / hace + [czas] + que + indefinido

To say how long ago a completed event happened, use „hace” + a time span together with indefinido — the event is finished, „hace” just measures the distance to it.

Examples
  • Llegué hace una hora.
    /ʝeˈɣe ˈa.θe ˈu.na ˈo.ɾa/
PLPrzyjechałem godzinę temu.ENI arrived an hour ago.
  • Hace dos años que nos conocimos.
    /ˈa.θe dos ˈa.ɲos ke nos ko.noˈθi.mos/
PLPoznaliśmy się dwa lata temu.ENWe met two years ago.
  • Terminé la carrera hace poco.
    /teɾ.miˈne la kaˈre.ɾa ˈa.θe ˈpo.ko/
PLNiedawno skończyłem studia.ENI finished my degree not long ago.
Common mistake

Llegaba hace una hora.Llegué hace una hora.

„Hace + time ago” refers to a completed event at a specific point in the past — indefinido, not imperfecto.
