Negation

Four simple ways to say „no” — you drop in a ready word, not build from scratch.

I don't do something

A1no + verb

The simplest negation: put „no” RIGHT BEFORE the verb. „No entiendo”, „no hablo inglés”. One „no” is enough — it matches English „don't/doesn't”.

Examples
  • No entiendo.
    /no enˈtjen.do/
    PLNie rozumiem.ENI don't understand.
  • No hablo inglés.
    /no ˈa.βlo iŋˈɡles/
PLNie mówię po angielsku.ENI don't speak English.
  • No es verdad.
    /no es beɾˈðað/
    PLTo nieprawda.ENThat's not true.
Common mistake

No yo entiendo.Yo no entiendo.

„no” goes right before the verb, not before the pronoun. The pronoun (if you use one) stays first: „yo no entiendo” — but you usually drop „yo”.

Never

A1nunca + verb · no + verb + nunca

„nunca” = „never”. Put it BEFORE the verb („nunca voy”) or AFTER the verb with „no” up front („no voy nunca”) — both are correct and mean the same.

Examples
  • Nunca voy.
    /ˈnuŋ.ka boj/
    PLNigdy nie chodzę.ENI never go.
  • Nunca como carne.
    /ˈnuŋ.ka ˈko.mo ˈkaɾ.ne/
PLNigdy nie jem mięsa.ENI never eat meat.
  • No bebo nunca.
    /no ˈβe.βo ˈnuŋ.ka/
    PLNigdy nie piję.ENI never drink.
Common mistake

No nunca voy.Nunca voy.

Don't stack „no” and „nunca” BEFORE the verb. Either „nunca voy” on its own, or „no voy nunca” (with „nunca” after the verb). „No nunca voy” is wrong.

Not yet

A1todavía no

„todavía no” = „not yet”. Works as a short answer („—Have you finished? —Not yet”) or before the verb: „todavía no lo sé” (I don't know yet). Synonym: „aún no”.

Examples
  • Todavía no.
    /to.ðaˈβi.a no/
    PLJeszcze nie.ENNot yet.
  • Todavía no lo sé.
    /to.ðaˈβi.a no lo se/
PLJeszcze tego nie wiem.ENI don't know yet.
  • Todavía no ha llegado.
    /to.ðaˈβi.a no a ʝeˈɣa.ðo/
PLJeszcze nie przyszedł.ENHe hasn't arrived yet.
Common mistake

No todavía.Todavía no.

The order is fixed: „todavía no”, not „no todavía”. Literally „still + not”.

Me neither

A1(yo) tampoco · tampoco + verb

„tampoco” = „neither / not either” — the opposite of „también” („too”). „Yo tampoco” = „me neither”. Use it to agree with someone's negative: „—I don't like it. —Me neither”.

Examples
  • Yo tampoco.
    /ʝo tamˈpo.ko/
    PLJa też nie.ENMe neither.
  • A mí tampoco.
    /a mi tamˈpo.ko/
    PLMnie też nie.ENMe neither.
  • Tampoco me gusta.
    /tamˈpo.ko me ˈɣus.ta/
PLMnie też się nie podoba.ENI don't like it either.
Common mistake

Yo también no.Yo tampoco.

To agree with a negative, use „tampoco”, not „también no”. „—I'm not going. —Me neither” = „yo tampoco”.

Now you

Now you.

First learn it. Then use it right away.

entiendo.
(no — before the verb)
I don't understand.
