Comparisons

Four ready-made comparison frames — you slot words in, you don't build from scratch.

More and less

A2más / menos + adj. + que

„More/less than”. The adjective stays in its base form — Spanish doesn't inflect it like English „-er”; „más … que” or „menos … que” does all the work.

Examples
  • Madrid es más grande que Sevilla.
    /maˈðɾið es mas ˈɣɾan.de ke seˈβi.ʝa/
PLMadryt jest większy niż Sewilla.ENMadrid is bigger than Seville.
  • Este café es menos fuerte que aquel.
    /ˈes.te kaˈfe es ˈme.nos ˈfweɾ.te ke aˈkel/
PLTa kawa jest mniej mocna niż tamta.ENThis coffee is less strong than that one.
Common mistake

Madrid es más grande de Sevilla.Madrid es más grande que Sevilla.

After „más/menos” you compare with „que”, not „de”. „de” only appears before a number: „más de diez”.

Just as much

A2tan + adj. + como · tanto/a/os/as + noun + como

„As … as”. „tan … como” with an adjective or adverb; „tanto … como” with a noun — and there „tanto” agrees in gender and number (tanto/tanta/tantos/tantas).

singularpluralmasculinetantotantosfemininetantatantas
Examples
  • Soy tan alta como tú.
    /soj tan ˈal.ta ˈko.mo tu/
PLJestem tak wysoka jak ty.ENI'm as tall as you.
  • Tengo tantos libros como tú.
    /ˈteŋ.ɡo ˈtan.tos ˈli.βɾos ˈko.mo tu/
PLMam tyle książek co ty.ENI have as many books as you.
Common mistake

Tengo tan libros como tú.Tengo tantos libros como tú.

Before a noun use the inflected „tanto” (tantos, tantas…), not „tan”. „tan” pairs only with an adjective or adverb.

Exceptions

A2mejor · peor · mayor · menor (+ que)

Four comparatives don't use „más”: bueno → mejor (better), malo → peor (worse), grande → mayor (older), pequeño → menor (younger). „mayor/menor” usually about age.

Examples
  • Este restaurante es mejor que el otro.
    /ˈes.te res.tauˈɾan.te es meˈxoɾ ke el ˈo.tɾo/
PLTa restauracja jest lepsza niż tamta.ENThis restaurant is better than the other one.
  • Mi hermano es mayor que yo.
    /mi eɾˈma.no es maˈʝoɾ ke ʝo/
PLMój brat jest starszy ode mnie.ENMy brother is older than me.
Common mistake

Es más bueno que el otro.Es mejor que el otro.

Don't say „más bueno / más malo” — the irregulars „mejor / peor” are correct. For size „más grande / más pequeño” exist, but for age you use „mayor / menor”.

Comparing actions

A2verb + más / menos + que · verb + tanto como

You compare the actions themselves — how much someone does something. „más/menos que” for a difference, „tanto como” for equality. Frame: verb + más/menos + que, or verb + tanto + como.

Examples
  • Trabajo más que tú.
    /tɾaˈβa.xo mas ke tu/
PLPracuję więcej niż ty.ENI work more than you.
  • Estudio menos que él.
    /esˈtu.ðjo ˈme.nos ke el/
PLUczę się mniej niż on.ENI study less than him.
  • Este café cuesta menos que aquel.
    /ˈes.te kaˈfe ˈkwes.ta ˈme.nos ke aˈkel/
PLTa kawa kosztuje mniej niż tamta.ENThis coffee costs less than that one.
  • Viajo tanto como vosotros.
    /ˈbja.xo ˈtan.to ˈko.mo βoˈso.tɾos/
PLPodróżuję tyle co wy.ENI travel as much as you all.
Common mistake

Trabajo más como tú.Trabajo más que tú.

For a difference („more/less”) you compare with „que”. Keep „como” for equality: „tanto como”.
