Prepositions

Every simple (single-word) Spanish preposition. Starting with the two pairs that trip up Polish speakers first, then the rest — from everyday to archaic.

Por or para?

A2por (przyczyna / przez / za) · para (cel / dla / termin)

„Por” marks the cause, the route, what something happens through, or what's exchanged for what (because of, through, in exchange for). „Para” marks the purpose, the destination, or a deadline (for, in order to, by when).

Examples
  • Lo hago por ti.
    /lo ˈa.ɣo poɾ ti/
PLRobię to z twojego powodu.ENI'm doing this because of you.
  • Este regalo es para ti.
    /ˈes.te reˈɣa.lo es ˈpa.ɾa ti/
PLTen prezent jest dla ciebie.ENThis gift is for you.
  • Caminamos por el parque.
    /ka.miˈna.mos poɾ el ˈpaɾ.ke/
PLIdziemy przez park.ENWe're walking through the park.
  • Necesito esto para el lunes.
    /ne.θeˈsi.to ˈes.to ˈpa.ɾa el ˈlu.nes/
PLPotrzebuję tego na poniedziałek.ENI need this by Monday.
Common mistake

Gracias para tu ayuda.Gracias por tu ayuda.

Thanking someone for something that already happened takes „por” (the cause), not „para”.

A or en?

A2a (kierunek / kontakt) · en (miejsce / wnętrze)

„A” marks the direction of movement or a specific point of contact (where to, to whom). „En” marks the place something is or happens in (where, inside what).

Examples
  • Voy a Madrid.
    /ˈboj a maˈðɾið/
PLJadę do Madrytu.ENI'm going to Madrid.
  • Vivo en Madrid.
    /ˈbi.βo en maˈðɾið/

PLDzwonię do mojej siostry.ENI'm calling my sister.
  • El libro está en la mesa.
    /el ˈli.βɾo esˈta en la ˈme.sa/
PLKsiążka jest na stole.ENThe book is on the table.
Common mistake

Voy en Madrid.Voy a Madrid.

Movement toward a destination takes „a”, not „en” — „en” stays put, describing where something already is.

Con

A1con — z (towarzystwo, narzędzie)

„Con” is the plain preposition of company and instrument — who you're with, or what you do something with.

Examples
  • Voy con mi hermano.
    /ˈboj kon mi eɾˈma.no/
PLIdę z moim bratem.ENI'm going with my brother.
  • Escribo con un lápiz.
    /esˈkɾi.βo kon un ˈla.piθ/
PLPiszę ołówkiem.ENI write with a pencil.

De

A1de — z, o (pochodzenie, przynależność, temat)

„De” marks origin, possession, or topic — where something is from, whose it is, what you're talking about.

Examples
  • Soy de Polonia.
    /soj de poˈlo.nja/
    PLJestem z Polski.ENI'm from Poland.
  • Hablamos de música.
    /aˈβla.mos de ˈmu.si.ka/
PLRozmawiamy o muzyce.ENWe're talking about music.

Sin

A1sin — bez

„Sin” is the plain „without” — the absence of a thing or of company.

Examples
  • No puedo vivir sin café.
    /no ˈpwe.ðo βiˈβiɾ sin kaˈfe/
PLNie mogę żyć bez kawy.ENI can't live without coffee.
  • Salió sin decir nada.
    /saˈljo sin deˈθiɾ ˈna.ða/
PLWyszedł, nic nie mówiąc.ENHe left without saying anything.

Sobre

A2sobre — na, o, ponad (dotyk z góry albo temat)

„Sobre” is physically „on top of” something (touching from above) or, figuratively, a topic — close to „en” but stresses the surface, not the inside.

Examples
  • El libro está sobre la mesa.
    /el ˈli.βɾo esˈta ˈso.βɾe la ˈme.sa/
PLKsiążka jest na stole.ENThe book is on the table.
  • Hablamos sobre el futuro.
    /aˈβla.mos ˈso.βɾe el fuˈtu.ɾo/
PLRozmawiamy o przyszłości.ENWe're talking about the future.

Contra

A2contra — przeciwko, o (coś)

„Contra” is opposition or physical contact against something — an opponent, an opposing side, or a surface something leans on.

Examples
  • Luchamos contra el tiempo.
    /luˈtʃa.mos ˈkon.tɾa el ˈtjem.po/
PLWalczymy z czasem.ENWe're racing against time.
  • Apoya la escalera contra la pared.
    /aˈpo.ʝa la es.kaˈle.ɾa ˈkon.tɾa la paˈɾeð/
PLOprzyj drabinę o ścianę.ENLean the ladder against the wall.

Desde

A2desde — od (punkt startowy w czasie lub przestrzeni)

„Desde” marks a starting point — since when, or from where, something goes on or begins. Unlike plain „de”, it stresses the continuity from that point.

Examples
  • Desde aquí se ve el mar.
/ˈdes.de aˈki se βe el maɾ/
PLStąd widać morze.ENFrom here you can see the sea.
  • Vivo aquí desde 2020.
    /ˈbi.βo aˈki ˈdes.de dos mil ˈbejn.te/
PLMieszkam tu od 2020.ENI've lived here since 2020.

Durante

A2durante — podczas, w trakcie

„Durante” spans the whole duration of an action — something happens throughout that period, not just at one point.

Examples
  • Durante el viaje, dormí mucho.
    /duˈɾan.te el ˈbja.xe ˈdoɾ.mi ˈmu.tʃo/
PLPodczas podróży dużo spałem.ENDuring the trip, I slept a lot.
  • No hables durante la película.
    /no ˈa.βles duˈɾan.te la peˈli.ku.la/
PLNie rozmawiaj podczas filmu.ENDon't talk during the movie.

Entre

A2entre — między, wśród

„Entre” is „between” two points or „among” a group — a place, a time, or a relationship involving more than one side.

Examples
  • El banco está entre la farmacia y el café.
    /el ˈbaŋ.ko esˈta ˈen.tɾe la faɾˈma.θja i el kaˈfe/
PLBank jest między apteką a kawiarnią.ENThe bank is between the pharmacy and the café.

    /ˈen.tɾe noˈso.tɾos no me ˈɣus.ta/
PLMiędzy nami mówiąc, nie podoba mi się to.ENBetween us, I don't like it.

Hacia

A2hacia — w kierunku, ku, około

„Hacia” is a direction, not an arrival — movement toward something, or an approximate time („around”).

Examples
  • Caminamos hacia el centro.
    /ka.miˈna.mos ˈa.θja el ˈθen.tɾo/
PLIdziemy w kierunku centrum.ENWe're walking towards downtown.
  • Llegaremos hacia las ocho.
    /ʝe.ɣaˈɾe.mos ˈa.θja las ˈo.tʃo/
PLDotrzemy około ósmej.ENWe'll arrive around eight.

Hasta

A2hasta — aż do, do (punkt końcowy)

„Hasta” is an endpoint — how far, or until when, something goes. The mirror of „desde”.

Examples
  • Trabajo hasta las seis.
    /tɾaˈβa.xo ˈas.ta las ˈsejs/
PLPracuję do szóstej.ENI work until six.
  • Caminamos hasta la playa.

Examples
  • Según el pronóstico, va a llover.
    /seˈɣun el pɾoˈnos.ti.ko ba a ʝoˈβeɾ/
PLWedług prognozy, będzie padać.ENAccording to the forecast, it's going to rain.

    /ˈka.ða ˈu.no akˈtu.a seˈɣun su kɾiˈte.ɾjo/
PLKażdy działa według własnego uznania.ENEveryone acts according to their own judgment.

Tras

B1tras — za, po (formalne)

„Tras” is a formal, one-word stand-in for both „después de” (after) and „detrás de” (behind) — more common in writing than speech.

Examples
  • Cerró la puerta tras de sí.
    /θeˈro la ˈpweɾ.ta tɾas de si/
PLZamknął drzwi za sobą.ENHe closed the door behind him.
  • Tras el examen, descansó.
    /tɾas el ekˈsa.men des.kanˈso/
PLPo egzaminie odpoczął.ENAfter the exam, he rested.

Ante

B1ante — przed, w obliczu (formalne)

„Ante” is a formal „before” — not physical position (that's „delante de”), but standing in the face of someone or something: a judge, a difficulty, a choice.

Examples
  • Ante el juez, dijo la verdad.
    /ˈan.te el xweθ ˈdi.xo la βeɾˈðað/
PLPrzed sędzią powiedział prawdę.ENBefore the judge, he told the truth.

PLNie poddał się w obliczu trudności.ENHe didn't give up in the face of difficulties.

Bajo

„Bajo” is „under” — physically (under the table) or figuratively (under pressure, under someone's control).

Examples
  • El gato duerme bajo la mesa.

PLPracujemy pod dużą presją.ENWe work under a lot of pressure.

Mediante

B2mediante — za pomocą, poprzez (formalne, pisane)

„Mediante” is a formal „by means of” or „through” — the means by which something gets done. Common in official writing and instructions, rare in speech.

Examples
  • Lo resolvimos mediante un acuerdo.
    /lo re.solˈβi.mos meˈðjan.te un aˈkweɾ.ðo/
PLRozwiązaliśmy to poprzez porozumienie.ENWe solved it through an agreement.

Vía

B1vía — przez, poprzez (trasa, kanał)

„Vía” marks the route or channel something travels through — a place along the way, or the medium something is sent by (e.g. „vía email”).

Examples
  • Viajamos a Roma vía Madrid.
    /ˈbja.xa.mos a ˈro.ma ˈbi.a maˈðɾið/
PLLecimy do Rzymu przez Madryt.ENWe're flying to Rome via Madrid.

Versus

zapożyczenieversus — kontra (zapożyczenie z łaciny)

„Versus” is a Latin loanword — it pits two sides against each other, mostly in sports, courts, and debates. Everyday speech usually reaches for „contra” instead.

Examples
  • España versus Francia, esta noche.
    /esˈpa.ɲa ˈbeɾ.sus ˈfɾan.θja ˈes.ta ˈno.tʃe/
PLHiszpania kontra Francja, dziś wieczorem.ENSpain versus France, tonight.

Cabe

archaicznecabe — obok, przy (archaiczne)

„Cabe” used to mean „next to, beside” — today it's essentially extinct, found only in older literary texts. Modern Spanish uses „junto a” or „al lado de” instead.

Examples
  • Cabe la fuente, descansamos.
    /ˈka.βe la ˈfwen.te des.kanˈsa.mos/
PLObok fontanny odpoczęliśmy.ENBeside the fountain, we rested.

So

archaiczneso — pod (groźbą), z powodu (archaiczne, prawnicze)

„So” survives only in fossilized legal phrases, chiefly „so pena de” (under penalty of). Outside those fixed expressions it isn't used at all.

Examples
  • No puede salir, so pena de multa.
    /no ˈpwe.ðe saˈliɾ so ˈpe.na de ˈmul.ta/
PLNie może wyjść pod groźbą kary.ENHe may not leave, under penalty of a fine.
